feedahungrychild.org is a not-for-profit social enterprise that adopts business-like entrepreneurial approaches and earned-income strategies to achieve its mission and sustainability.

The Trust has already started on a major project - the ‘You Can Cook’ book consisting of 365 traditional heirloom recipes (recipes cooked at home that are in danger of extinction) all from the public domain.  The cookbook project is a collaborative effort on the part of food lovers the world over predominantly by food blogging community.   The effort of this project is two pronged; that of documenting disappearing recipes along with practical hands-on cooking advice as well the larger goal of generating sustained income for trust activities.

The 365 recipes (so that the reader has 365 days of culinary exploration to look forward to) will be short-listed and published into a book with an appealing format that will enhance the shelf of any cook or food lover.

The income from the book will be used in the wider context of aims of the Trust and will form part of the core budget.  The publication method is yet to be determined with may either be self-publication or by the use of a Publisher. Either of the methods has an associated cost and income scenario.  Self publication maybe a cheaper option, however, requires funding upfront for the production of the book, plus the cost and resources to market and distribute the book.  Using the Publisher means they will market the book and carry the cost of production and marketing, the Trust will receive royalties on book sales.

We are quite touched by the generosity of so many recipe contributors at the You Can Cook cookbook project.  We have gathered a total of 400+ recipes out of which 365 recipes are chosen to be included in the cookbook.  The recipes are still flowing in since we have kept the submission deadline open for a few more months.  The content development of the cookbook is currently in the process of proofreading, editing, and formats before being published into a user-friendly attractive design and layout.  Taste-testing of the recipes is another ongoing task for which we are seeking out for some more volunteers.  We intend to publish the You Can Cook book some time during 2008.

How you can contribute?  Did you always mean to write down Dadi’s daal recipe? Have you been procrastinating about noting down Nani’s pickle recipe? Mom’s chutney or Mausi’s biryani, whatever the recipe, here is a unique chance to keep your promise to yourself as well as contribute to a worthy project.  The ‘You Can Cook” cookbook project invites contributions for Heirloom recipes (recipes cooked at home that are in danger of extinction) from anyone who wishes to participate. Our goal is to shortlist 365 of the most unique recipes. While all recipes might not make their way to the book they will be online on this site.  Keep your promise to destiny, call that master chef in your family and send in his/her heirloom recipes along with their story and your email address (in case we require clarification) to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
